BAM Nuttall and Taylor Woodrow

Joint Venture
Two major UK civil engineering and construction companies, working on a joint venture for Transport for London to upgrade Tottenham Court Road station.

The Requirement

All workers must carry CSCS cards. The clients wanted to:

  • Log and check this electronically and integrate the data into BAM Nuttall's competence management system which was the designated on-site training and competence system.
  • Save time in processing individuals during the initial site induction and briefing process linked to the individual’s ID card (in this case ideally the CSCS card).
  • Reduce the admin burden of processing and inputting data as this would be the responsibility of reception staff.
  • Synergise the process between checking CSCS cards and enrolling individuals into the physical access control system which included hand biometrics and turnstiles.

The Solution

The solution involved extending the client's competence management system to take data straight from the CSCS smartcard and to enrol individuals into the client’s HR and training system onsite. Details of site inductions were logged at the same time and the individual was enrolled into the physical access control system, using the CSCS card instead of the usual card supplied by the access control supplier.

Enormous savings in time and money were made on this single site.

The solution was nominated for a number of awards in the construction sector for best use of technology and innovation.

The Outcome

More robust induction process, underpinning site safety.

Enormous savings in time and money were made on this single site.

The solution was nominated for a number of awards in the construction sector for best use of technology and innovation.

Most recently, in September 2014, the JV received the "Outstanding project contribution to supply chain engagement" Award, at the CITB 50th Anniversary Pride of Construction Awards, for developing the skills, qualifications and employability of their supply chain workforce.
