All industries face challenges and one area of concern for the construction industry is the identification and validation of its large and diverse mobile workforce.
Through the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), construction workers are issued with smartcards that contain up-to-date information about their training and qualifications. Employers and Site Managers can then check the cards to ensure they have the right people with the right skills for the work to be done, helping to improve safety and standards for all.
Earlier this week, Howard Button CEO of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors announced that a number of fraudulent CCDO cards had been discovered at a printing company in England and warned demolition contractors to be extra vigilant when performing their on-site checks.
The best way to check either a virtual or physical CSCS or partner scheme smartcard is electronically, using the official CSCS card reading app - Go Smart - which was developed by CSCS technology partner Reference Point. With Go Smart, Site Managers and other card checkers can access the most up-to-date information in real-time to validate the identity and qualifications of a cardholder, making it much easier to identify “fake” and expired cards.
Alan O’Neile, Head of Communications at CSCS said: "CSCS takes the issue of fraudulent activity extremely seriously and it is essential that steps are taken to prevent it. No one wants an unqualified or unsafe operative on site and it is important for us all to ensure that an effective system is in place to tackle card fraud. CSCS has long maintained that the most effective way to tackle card fraud is to read the cards electronically. A quick electronic scan of a card will immediately alert site managers to potential fraud."
The Go Smart mobile apps turn Android and Windows smartphones and NFC enabled tablets into smartcard readers; the app is also available for PCs and laptops. There is also an iPhone Go Smart app, which currently only reads virtual smartcards.
